Local Missions Spotlight

Local Missions Spotlight

by Pat & Lyn Bevis, Local Missions Committee Co-Chairs

Capital Area Justice Ministry (CAJM)
March 27 saw a wonderful turnout for the Nehemiah Action Event to wrap up a year of hard work by the members of CAJM. Some progress was made with our local elected officials. But the needs continue, so on to year three. Please consider getting involved next year as each person matters. Kudos to Tisha Keller, our Trinity liaison.

Elder Care Services
Our April mission speaker, Josie Fliger, from Elder Care Services, inspired us to get out of the pews and serve the homebound of our community. We will be preparing cold food boxes and delivering meals on May 19. If you have not yet signed up to participate, please do so soon! The signup links are in the bulletin and the News & Notes weekly email.

Mission Sunday on May 21
This special Sunday will bring you more information about the International Rescue Committee (more below) and the Co-Sponsor Team from Trinity who are working so hard to help a newly resettled family.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)
Our group of 14 volunteers, led by Daniel Diaz, has moved Trinity forward to become a co-sponsor of a refugee family. This co-sponsorship has required a lot of specific training as well as commitments on the part of the team to make sure that certain milestone events take place. We are collecting items to assist with short-term needs and housing setup as our own co-sponsorship team works to find permanent housing for our family.

Please consider making a donation to support our family.  Click here for a list of needed supplies, and drop them off at the bins that are marked in the Welcome Center.  Alternatively, cash contributions can be made by marking your gift “For IRC project” in the offering plate or by selecting “Int’l Rescue Project” when making a donation through the Giving section of the church website. All checks should be made out to Trinity United Methodist Church. Donations will be collected through Wednesday, 5/10.

Contact Daniel Diaz at 305-342-3702 if you would like to donate furniture or bulky items. Furniture will not be collected in the Welcome Center.

Summary
It has been a busy first few months as co-chairs of this wonderful committee. We are so thankful for all the committee members and the Trinity congregation who are so supportive of our local missions’ needs. It will be summer soon, and the committee has elected to keep meeting and looking for ways to serve this community. This would be a great time to come and join us as we look for new missions for the fall. Also, we are planning to have at least one active event for volunteers of all ages during the summer and hope you will join in.
